Introduction

A structured educational programme on “Role of Educational Institutions in Promoting Human Values” was conducted for III Semester B.Sc. Nursing students at SDMIONS, Dharwad. The programme aimed to emphasize the importance of human values in education and professional practice, particularly in the nursing profession, to foster ethical, compassionate, and responsible healthcare providers.

Programme Details

The programme comprised a series of lectures and case-based discussions delivered by experienced faculty members. All the resource persons for the programme were Assistant Professors from the Department of Pharmacology, SDM medical college and hospital , Dharwad. Each session focused on a specific human value essential for holistic development and ethical professional conduct.

  • Dr. Swathy highlighted the importance of teachers as role models, emphasizing how educators influence students’ values, attitudes, and behavior through their actions and professional ethics.
  • Dr. Jalikar discussed the development of accountability, appreciation, and helping nature, stressing the significance of responsibility, empathy, and teamwork in both personal and professional life.
  • Dr. Rashmi elaborated on discipline as a core human value, explaining its role in maintaining self- control, punctuality, and adherence to ethical standards.
  • Dr. Ravi addressed value education strategies, focusing on effective methods to integrate human values into the teaching–learning process through practical and interactive approaches.

To reinforce learning and assess understanding, 10 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) were administered by Dr. Jalikar and Dr. Ravi, followed by 2 Short Answer Questions (SAQs) conducted by Dr. Swathy and Dr. Rashmi H.

Outcome

The programme enhanced students’ awareness of human values and their relevance in nursing education and clinical practice. Active participation and interactive discussions reflected a positive learning experience, contributing significantly to the moral, ethical, and professional development of the students.

Conclusion

The programme successfully fulfilled its objective of promoting human values among nursing students. Educational institutions play a vital role in nurturing ethical, disciplined, and compassionate professionals through structured value-based educational activities, thereby strengthening the foundation of quality healthcare delivery.
