Introduction

The SDM Institute of Nursing Sciences, Dharwad, observed the 5th Anniversary of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA) on 01 December 2025. This nationwide initiative aims to create awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse and promote a drug-free society through community participation, youth engagement, and educational interventions.

Objectives of the Program

  • To sensitize students about the ill effects of drug and substance abuse.
  • To promote a drug-free lifestyle among youth.
  • To support the vision of the Government of India in creating a healthier society.
  • To motivate nursing students to act as ambassadors of awareness in their communities.

Program Activities

1. Pledge Taking Ceremony

A total of 150 nursing students participated in the pledge-taking ceremony. The oath was administered by the faculty member in charge. Students collectively pledged to stay away from drugs and contribute towards creating a drug-free society. The pledge emphasized awareness, responsibility, positive lifestyle choices, and supporting peers in avoiding substance abuse.

2. Awareness Talk

A brief awareness session was conducted highlighting:

  • The physical, psychological, and social consequences of drug abuse
  • The role of youth and healthcare professionals in prevention
  • Support systems available for rehabilitation and counselling

3. Student Interaction

Students actively shared their views and expressed their readiness to spread awareness in their respective communities.

Outcomes of the Program

  • Enhanced awareness among students regarding substance abuse and its consequences
  • Reinforced commitment to a drug-free campus and community
  • Empowered nursing students to act as champions of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan
  • Strengthened institutional support towards national health initiatives

Conclusion

The 5th Anniversary of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was successfully observed at SDM Institute of Nursing Sciences with active participation from 150 nursing students. The program fostered awareness, responsibility, and collective commitment towards building a healthy and drug-free society. The Institute reaffirms its support for national campaigns promoting public health and youth empowerment.
