The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing, SDM Institute of Nursing Sciences (SDMINS), Dharwad, organized a guest lecture on 4th May 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Ishaavaasyam Auditorium, SDM Specialty Hospital (Manjushree Block), Dharwad.
The program was conducted with the objective of enhancing the knowledge and awareness of nursing students and faculty regarding the critical role of midwives in ensuring safe and effective maternal care.
The session featured Dr. Asha H. Bhatakhande, Professor and Head of OBGYN, KLES’ Institute of Nursing Sciences, Hubballi, and Member, BOS (PG Nursing), RGUHS, Bengaluru, as the distinguished speaker. She delivered an insightful lecture on the topic:
“Midwives as Key Providers in Labour and Childbirth Care.”
Dr. Bhatakhande emphasized the importance of skilled midwifery care in improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. She highlighted global challenges in maternal health and the need for strengthening midwifery services through education, policy support, and increased investment.
The lecture was aligned with the theme:
“One Million More Midwives” to advocate for increased global investment in midwifery care.
The theme reinforced the urgent need to address the shortage of trained midwives and to promote quality care during pregnancy, labour, and the postnatal period.
The program was coordinated under the guidance of Ms. Bijlee Mundinamani, Head of the Department of OBGYN Nursing, and Dr. Prasanna Deshpande, I/C Principal, SDMINS Dharwad.
Faculty members and students from various nursing departments actively participated in the session. The lecture proved to be highly informative and inspiring, encouraging future nurses to recognize and strengthen their role in maternal and child health services.
The program concluded with an interactive session, where participants engaged with the speaker, clarifying their doubts and sharing insights.
